highlights from mike's commentary on monkees on tour:
mike claims all of them were really surprised by their success. they really didn't think they were as big as their subsequent concerts proved
a new flavour of mike's negative energy where instead of talking about how confused he was he talks about how they weren't a band, they were never a real band, and despite them playing together it never made them a band. in fact according to mike he never thought much about the monkees as a band because they never were one ๐ (side note it is just so wild to me how opposite mike and peter are with their views on this)
he says they all loved being involved in the music scene at that time because they all genuinely loved the music coming out, even though mike believes they remained on the outside of that inner circle
the girl i knew somewhere was mike's attempt to have a less overt country tune (aka him trying to appeal to the monkees sound and get a song on the album etc) he says micky played it good ๐
"i'm not sure what the screams were about"
mike's maraca number was inspired by a bo diddley performance he saw where jerome green did this stellar maraca number that really, really impacted mike ๐
mike points out a lack of reciprocity between themselves as artists and their audience. he specifically mentions that their young teen fans wouldn't be able to properly appreciate peter's banjo playing or his own homage to bo diddley simply because he believed they had no frame of reference to compare it to
mike is very amused once again talking about micky's solo routine. he even brings up micky's cover group the missing links! he calls mick's performance a mix of james brown and mick jagger. mike concludes that it was great to watch because micky threw his heart and soul into it ๐๐
mike believes that the force of their characters as people ended up infecting/taking over their characters on the show until they became these things that no one knew what to do with other than to let them burn themselves out
